{"id":993,"date":"2011-09-27T11:51:32","date_gmt":"2011-09-27T15:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sparetherock.com\/wordpress\/?p=993"},"modified":"2011-09-27T11:51:32","modified_gmt":"2011-09-27T15:51:32","slug":"a-quick-mention-of-dan-zaness-new-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sparetherock.com\/wordpress\/reviews\/a-quick-mention-of-dan-zaness-new-record\/","title":{"rendered":"A Quick Mention of Dan Zanes&#8217;s New Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My life is particularly complicated right now, but I didn&#8217;t want to let the release date of Dan Zanes&#8217;s new record, <em>Little Nut Tree<\/em>, go by without at least a quick mention.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about what makes for great family music, my answer is often centered on genuineness &#8212; the sense, <a href=\"http:\/\/moms.today.com\/_news\/2011\/09\/22\/7900864-spare-the-rock-spoil-the-child-kindie-music-takes-off\">as I said last week<\/a>, \u00a0that the artists &#8220;are doing the only thing that they could possibly be doing&#8221; in performing music for families. \u00a0That has always been the fundamental appeal of Zanes&#8217;s music. \u00a0It&#8217;s not gimmicky or particularly complex (though there&#8217;s more going on musically than might meet the ear), but it is simply <em>real<\/em>. \u00a0The guests don&#8217;t feel like they were chosen strategically, but instead because they were right for the song (or maybe the songs are picked as being right for the artists). \u00a0The production isn&#8217;t flashy, but instead gets out of the way of the songs and the musicians. \u00a0When he&#8217;s had missteps (<em>76 Trombones<\/em>, say) it&#8217;s not because the CDs are bad &#8212; they just don&#8217;t feel like they were organic. \u00a0But those missteps are rare; the vast bulk of his family discography simply feels <em>right<\/em>. \u00a0And <em>real<\/em>. \u00a0And <em>sincere<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Little Nut Tree<\/em>\u00a0continues that tradition of genuineness. \u00a0It&#8217;s just plain terrific.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My life is particularly complicated right now, but I didn&#8217;t want to let the release date of Dan Zanes&#8217;s new record, Little Nut Tree, go by without at least a quick mention.
