Jellyman Kelly May Just Be The Start

So Dena and I saw Mates of State last night at the Iron Horse. They're doing a new thing on this tour - Kor plays a baby grand piano rather than the usual array of keyboards, while they've added a bass player/backup singer and a cellist. So it's on the one hand a little less rock-looking, but in fact was just about as satisfying. It was a great, if brief, set, with local band the Winterpills doing an acoustic trio opening set.

We talked briefly with Kor afterwards and I mentioned how much we like "Jellyman Kelly," their contribution to For the Kids 3 (a compilation CD so great it's already walked away from the station, grr!). She said that someone yelled it out at a recent NYC show (they don't [yet?] do it live), and, more notably, that they're wanting to do more kids' stuff.

This makes sense -- recall that they chronicled the life touring with now-three-year-old Magnolia for Babble, and Kor is quite pregnant now (I think she said that she's due in a couple of months). Sounds great, can't wait.

Also: Go Sox.

Kinda Like Asia and Damn Yankees but Not, You Know, Terrible

Kindie Rock PR head Steph Mayers posed an intriguing question to me:

Who would be in the Traveling Wilburys of kids' music? If you could create a supergroup -- one that would not end up doing anything remotely like the Power Station did -- made up only of current and past family musicians, who would you include? And why?

Post in the comments...

Libana at Smith

On Friday, November 30, the Smith College Campus School (where both kids go) PTO is pleased to present Libana live at the college chapel. Should be a ton of fun.

Totally Off Topic and Kinda Self-Aggrandizing

...but I'm gonna note it anyway:

I got quoted in the NY Times again. (The last time is noted here. I was funnier in that one.)

You kids with your new-fangled technologies

If one of your new-fangled technologies is a cell phone that can download ringtones, well, this is cool. For whatever reason, my Treo -- while generally pretty fancy and schmancy -- can't do such ringtones, so it is not for me. But perhaps it is for you!

They Day: Are You Observing?

Um, I'm not.

But it's fun to read about anyway, and maybe your kids want to go to school with "THEY" written on their foreheads.

You All Rule.

I love our listeners. So very very much.

Why? Not least because you're responsible for probably at least ten percent of the donations made to the recent Valley Free Radio pledge drive. (Keep in mind that our two hours of programming makes up 2/168 = um, I think like one percent of the station's air time.)

But more specifically these mittens:

Those are teeny tiny cute mittens (click on them to see), and they are not for me.

Loyal listener Kelli Ann from Quebec saw my post about Sammy's Big Night, a concert benefit for a local family from our church. Sammy - who's I guess about four or five months old now - lost his mom just a few days after he was born. And along with a generous donation for the fund for Sammy, Kelli knitted those adorable mittens and that wonderful hat.

Dena and I both teared up when we saw them, and I'm doing so again just writing this post. Hooray for people who listen to great kids' music!

We're Gonna Have to Get a Big Ol' Red Carpet

...what with all of the premieres we're hosting. Last week it was Enzo Garcia, and we've had pre-release tracks from Telephone Company, Laura Freeman, Mr. Leebot, and more. (Edit: And Recess Monkey! I didn't even realize it was a premiere!)

And now on October 27 you'll get to hear -- before anyone else in the world -- brand new Brady Rymer, from his record that will come out in January or February. Brady will call in (he promises to write it on his calendar this time!) and chat too.

...and very soon we'll probably have another big interview announcement.

Whee!
