Perhaps They Will Cover "Take Off"

Live in Quebec? Go see The Deedle Deedle Dees in July. That is a very firm direction, not a suggestion.

World Premiere Hipwaders Song, Hipwader Tito's Guest Set, & Deedle Deedle Dees Live

...all here in one tasty package.

The Tito guest set also includes another "Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child" little ditty. Add that to the one from Mr. Richard and ScribbleMonster plus the two from TMBG (with a full song -- really! -- still coming), and we've got a bit of a collection.

Perhaps We'll Head Into Boston Some This Summer...

...to see this kids' music series at Regatta Bar, which has had a legendary jazz festival for years.

It's Just Like You Were There, Except for Being Fuzzy and Blurry and Probably Buffering

Okay, so I will soon have the podcast put together which will include the Hipwaders' world premiere song, Tito from the Hipwaders doing an awesome guest DJ set, plus the full audio from the Deedle Deedle Dees live show at Artifacts 20th Century.

But you can also watch the full concert below. Note that I just set up the video camera on the tripod and mostly left it alone, so there is much you can't see. If you want better, you should've come.

Nellie Bly:

Rancher Ants:

Henry Box Brown:

Obedience School:

Play Your Hands:

Teddy Days:

Bring 'Em In (may or may not be the song's actual name):

Drum:

Hum (may or may not be the song's actual name):

Playlist for 6-16-07

That "[blank]" is to take the place of the many, many obsecenities I uttered when I discovered that the recording, yet again, did not work. I'm about to download what I hope is a better software package and may start recording onto digital videotape first, and then transfer. We'll see. I'm super bummed, because the Dees were awesome.

I will get Tito's guest set into an archive form and put it up, and it's well worth listening to itself. [Update: Tito's guest set plus the full Deedle Deedle Dees show from that night are here.

Wow.

I generally save CD-specific comments for my columns, but I've gotta say this:

Renee & Jeremy's "It's a Big World" is flat-out gorgeous. Warm, sweet, at-times haunting. Beautiful. Go get it. Now. If you don't like it, track me down and we'll make it right somehow.

(But if you don't like it, you're wrong.)

I Cannot Begin To Tell You Everything That's Happening

Actually, I can. That title is an exaggeration.

1. We are back from ten days in Minnesota. We had a ton of fun:
a. At Dena's and my college reunion.
b. Staying half the time with our long-time friends Jim & Kim & Will & Ellen & Charlie, and staying the other half of the time with Liam & Ella's aunt and uncle Tara and Dave.
c. Seeing and interviewing Asheba.
d. Touring Minnesota Public Radio and meeting many of the people I like best in radio.
e. Hanging out at the Science Museum of Minnesota and, later, learning that Liam and Ella's uncle Dave helped build the towboat in this exhibit.
f. Going fishing with said Uncle Dave (both kids caught fish! all were released)
g. Catching up with lots of friends & family & colleagues, including meeting our friends Wendy and Greg's new puppies.

Pictures of all to come.

2. Thanks to ScribbleJim and to Mr. Richard for great guest sets! Pictures from Mr. Richard's show at Cup & Top are here.

3. Valley Kids is now online, and my current column is here! Nice looking site, too.

4. Deedle. Deedle. Dees! This Saturday. Ulysses S. Dee will be doing a solo set at Cup & Top at around 10, and the full band will be at Artifacts 20th Century (28 N. Maple in Florence) at 6:00 in the evening. It's a benefit for Flywheel and public interest law scholarships, and you simply must attend.

5. It will be a tight schedule for you, but you probably should also attend the Gustafer Yellowgold show at Mass MoCA at 11 that morning.

6. Also this week on the show, Hipwader Tito's guest DJ set with a late-breaking addition of a world premier new Hipwaders song! Whoo-hoo!

Room to Grow

(Note from Bill: press release follows. I usually don't post press releases by themselves, but (a) I'm traveling and (b) this looks very cool. Let me make clear, though, that you can only attend this if you promise to get back to Northampton for the Deedle Deedle Dees show that evening.)

Room to Grow hosts a benefit family concert on Saturday, June 16th
Featuring Smithsonian Folkways Recording Artist Elizabeth Mitchell and Family & David Weinstone’s Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals

Sponsored by WBOS & Boston Common Magazine
Ticket Sales Benefit Babies through Room to Grow - www.roomtogrow.org

WHO: Elizabeth Mitchell and Family
Mitchell brings a fresh sound to cherished American folk songs and other
melodies from around the world. In a peaceful yet powerful way, she reintroduces us to the songs we thought we knew so well. Featuring homespun renditions of songs by Woody Guthrie, Bob Marley, The Velvet Underground, Vashti Bunyan, Gillian Welch and more.

“This is the family music that I love – soulful, mysterious, inclusive & rollicking!”
– Dan Zanes

David Weinstone’s Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals:
Music for Aardvarks is a multi-faceted world of musical adventures created by classically trained ex-punk rocker, David Weinstone. After the birth of this first child, David began Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals in reaction to the dearth of cool music available. In an exhilarating range of musical styles executed with superb musical literacy and richness of instrumentation, his songs reflect and celebrate the lives of children growing up in urban environments as well as themes universal to all children.

It’s real music—the songs are so good.” -Phish keyboardist Page McConnell

WHAT: Room to Grow (www.roomtogrow.org) hosts a family concert, the proceeds of which will support their efforts to enrich the lives of babies born into poverty throughout their critical first three years of development.
