Hi, I'm a dork.

Why?

Because I just bought tickets for the second TMBG show at the Iron Horse on May 5. Two shows the same night, the later one starting at 10 at night, and I'm going to both. (Dena will join me for the first one.) Yes, I'm usually asleep at 10.

But how often will I get to see them at a venue this small?

Miscellany...

1. As we mentioned on the show this morning, They Might Be Giants have two shows here on May 5, and it looks like we'll get to interview them (not live - 8-10 AM is early for a touring band, it turns out). What questions should we ask? Post them in the comments.

2. Stefan is running a pretty awesome kids' video contest.

3. I've no idea why, but we have a MySpace page. Blame Audra. I will occasionally look at it for people asking to be friends because it will make me feel good to have people asking to be my friend.

4. We played a few tracks from the Brooklyn event, but even they were rough mixes. More tracks to play with makes me take longer to get them mixed. What we may do is play the full recording over several consecutive weeks' first hours. We'll see. I just took on a new consulting job that may bury me with work for a while, so it may take even longer than expected.

5. In addition to the Nields, Dan Schorr will be stopping by the show next Saturday.

More Brooklyn Pictures

...are here.

Also, be sure to listen to Valley Free Radio this coming Tuesday at 7:00 for the premiere of the Hilltown Families Variety Show, featuring Persephone and Sienna! They've both been on our show several times, and I'm thrilled they've gotten their own show too!

A little bit more of a report...

So finally, a little bit more of a report. I'm in Arkansas and our pictures are on our computer at home, so more pictures will have to wait, except that I'll post some from the nice folks in Lunch Money. (The first two below are ours; the rest are theirs. Thanks to them!)

We had a great time. The whole trip was just a bucket of fun. As I mentioned before, Justin's show at Symphony Space was excellent, the party with some of the Dees and others was relaxing and fun, Toxic Muffin and Tiny Masters rawked the house, and the event...

Wow, how to even start describing the event. Well, "long" is a good start. But such a great feeling. Some people knew each other, lots didn't, everyone was friendly and funny and helpful. And the music was at a minimum good and sometimes absolutely transporting. Amazing how a lot of artists could get all the way to enchanting in the space of just one or two songs.

So, you ask, when will we hear all of this? Good question. I've done a first mix of about a third of the acts, but I have some tweaks to do and may not get anything finalized by this week's show. By early next week, I hope to have a plan for when it will all be aired.

Okay, so, some pictures (click on them for bigger pictures):

That was fun.

Yet another update...

Our New York adventure continues to be great fun. Last night we hung out with various Deedle Deedle Dees and guests, then today we saw an awesome Justin Roberts show (with the full Not Ready for Naptime Players band). We've seen Justin several times, but always just with Liam Davis -- it was great fun to see the full band. They are really, really good. Got to talk briefly with Justin afterwards, and he was, as always, very kind.

One odd coincidence: last night we saw a brief video from some of the Dees' former incarnation in a Smiths cover band. (No, I'm not kidding.) And then today Justin mentioned that they got a request for -- yes! -- a Smiths cover. But they didn't in fact play one.

Me: not a Smiths fan.

And we're fixing to go over to the venue first to see Toxic Muffin and Tiny Masters, then our big ol' party.

Whoo-hoo!

The City That Never Sleeps Kinda Keeps Us Up Too

Well, our first day in the city yesterday was fun. Dena and the kids went to a big photo of sock knitters (it's complicated) in Central Park, and then I met up with them at the Museum of Natural History, after stopping by to see a friend from when I was in practice. The museum was wonderful; we spent most of our time on the fourth floor, with the dinosaurs. I love the organization -- by evolutionary trait -- and the presentation. Ella says she wants to work there.

Then Dena went off to a reading by a knitter (The Yarn Harlot) while the kids and I went to dinner. I found a directory of kid-friendly restaurants and a nearby place was reported to have over a hundred kinds of crepes. We're all about crepes so that sounded good, so we walked over there. Turns out the menu is not so much the way it was, so they had like three kinds of crepes. Still, one was crepes with maple syrup, so they had that and I had some yummy lobster ravioli and a pomengranate (sp?) margarita. Walked back to the hotel, read two chapters of Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and went to sleep.

Eventually.

Our hotel, the Travel Inn on west 42nd, is clean and a good value (especially with free parking) but our room, facing 42nd, is not quiet. But the kids (having probably walked 2 or 3 miles during the day) went to sleep fast, and I got to sleep pretty soon too.

Today: knitting exhibit at the Museum of Art and Design, probably the Central Park Zoo, and a party!

2007-03-24 Playlist

"But Bill!" you splutter. "It's only March 21! How can you possibly be posting the playlist three days in advance?!"

It's magic, my friends. And if I told you how I did it, I'd have to kill you. But it might have something to do with it being prerecorded by ScribbleJim and daughter, and us leaving tomorrow for the city that never sleeps. (And oh, how that phrase has caused conversations in our house.)

For those of you who will be in Brooklyn, see you there. For those of you who won't, well, have fun here and wish us luck.

Speaking of Quirk Rock...

What, you weren't speaking of quirk rock? Oh, well, I was. You'll have to trust me on this one, I guess.

I can't make it, but any of you who can, please attend the Too Much Joy reunion show on May 4 at the Knitting Factory and report back. I last saw them play at the last show presented by the very early modern rock station KJ-104, on a bill with, if memory serves (and it probably doesn't) the Wonder Stuff. Or maybe Live; I remember they played a show right around then too. And we even had a quote from them on our wedding program.

Anyway, we play them occasionally on the show and I'm pleased to see they're playing out again.

Spring break this week for Ella and me, but not for Liam. And we head to New York on Thursday. Hooray!

Well, we walked through (literally) two feet of snow to get there, but it was still a fun show. I didn't bring in the Big Box of Our CDs, so we didn't have (among other things) ScribbleMonster's "Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child."

Scheduling Update

Keith Munslow has had to cancel tomorrow's appearance on the show and at Cup & Top -- he has food poisoning and isn't getting better as quickly as he hoped. We will get it rescheduled as soon as we can!

Munslow & Other Stuff

Sorry for the radio silence lately. Some stuff:

- Keith Munslow will be on the show this week. Keith is good on record but great live. Local listeners should definitely head to Cup & Top to check him out -- he will crack you up.

- Alternatively, this week is Flywheel's big farewell shindig until they get in their new space. The Pop Rockets (who were on the show a few weeks ago) will be playing in the morning.

- Brooklyn is coming together nicely. Thanks, incidentally, to the Pokey Pup (link over there on the right) and Kindie Rock PR (kindierockpr@gmail.com) for generously sponsoring the show. It's a small space and invite-only, so don't go wandering around trying to find us, but do look forward to listening! Here's a preview:

- We'll also be seeing Justin Roberts and/or Milkshake that Saturday, plus going to this very cool exhibit at the Museum of Design. And to this, which I admit may puzzle me, but feeling out of place is nothing new. Though I don't think we'll make it there, Ernie & Neal will be rawking out at The Living Room, too.

- While we're in Brooklyn, you can still listen to the show, guest-hosted on March 24 by ScribbleJim and ScribbleDaughter. (Through the magic of technology, Jim will also be in Brooklyn that day.) If you've heard past ScribbleGuestHostedShows, you know this will be fun.

- Check out all those events we have coming up. (Over on the right.) Good stuff. I'm particularly interested in talking with Dennis Caraher about his recent work with kids who have gone through a loss; some of you know that my cousin in Little Rock died last week after a brief bout with spinal meningitis, leaving six-year-old twins, Allen and Amelia. Dennis's work with The Garden is compelling and important.

- Stefan's been busy, what with announcing the fifty best family songs of all time and doing a bracket thingie with video from kids' artists. Go check it out.

- Amy, too, has been busy, what with a conspiracy theory involving American Idol and maybe the Trilateral Commission. Plus good stuff about media for families. She's coming to Brooklyn, too!

- And Gwyneth, too, is busy, with the best nearly-daily updates on kids' music happenings I know of. And she and the Gooney Bird Kids are coming to Brooklyn!

- Another year we're not at South by Southwest. Maybe next year. For the last couple of years, the best radio appearances have been at The Current from Minnesota Public Radio. Mary Lucia is my radio hero and does insightful and hilarious interviews.

All right, gotta start some bean soup. After a couple of days of temperatures in the 60s, it's in the 40s today. Soup will be good.

Dennis Caraher Returning

Friend-of-the-show Dennis Caraher will return to stop by the show on March 31, with a neat new project:
I've been doing some work with this place called "The Garden", writing songs with kids who've experience a death in the family. The artwork that these kids have come up with is being displayed at C&T for a bit. I know this sounds like kind of a departure from what I do although I've always included songs about sadness and loss on both my CD's, but I rarely perform them. The focus of the show won't be on loss but I will sing one or two of the songs we've come up with.

Also, the June 2 appearance by Mr. Richard is being changed from being a live in-studio to being him guest hosting the whole darn show, as we'll be in Minnesota for our college reunion. He will still be playing at Cup & Top afterwards.

And this week, I'll be extra extra tired, as my plane back from New Orleans isn't getting into the airport until nearly midnight Friday night. So be forgiving.

Ralph & Great Changers

Just heard a promo on the radio - Ralph Covert of Ralph's World will be on All Things Considered tonight. I will be eating here, so I will have to listen later. I'm sure I have all of your sympathies for being forced to eat at one of the best seafood places in New Orleans.

Also: Ella has pitched the idea of her birthday party being "Great Changer"-themed. Last year her first grade class did quite a bit about Great Changers -- ranging from MLK to Julia Butterfly Hill and so on. How, I ask, might one do a birthday party themed after this concept? Any hints?

Updated (Again): More About That Brooklyn Show

So, along with some various bloggers and music writers (who I'll let identify themselves) who will be coming, here's a current list of folks who have said they're planning on coming to our live recording of the show in Brooklyn on March 24. Some will probably be just a subset of the band; when I know that, I'm noting it below.

John Carlin

And as I mentioned before, there are still some invitations out, some of which are to people who (I think) likely to be attending. It's going to be a pretty amazing group.
