Ralph & Great Changers
Just heard a promo on the radio - Ralph Covert of Ralph's World will be on All Things Considered tonight. I will be eating here, so I will have to listen later. I'm sure I have all of your sympathies for being forced to eat at one of the best seafood places in New Orleans.
Also: Ella has pitched the idea of her birthday party being "Great Changer"-themed. Last year her first grade class did quite a bit about Great Changers -- ranging from MLK to Julia Butterfly Hill and so on. How, I ask, might one do a birthday party themed after this concept? Any hints?

i think ella has a great idea there ;-) i remember listening to a public radio podcast about "money and moral balance," and one child's decision to ask party guests to make a contribution to a good cause-- then they can all be 'great changers' too. it could be a can for the local food bank, or spare change for UNICEF--
I know one family that made a party out of planting things in their garden that their daughter (who was turning 5 at the time) wanted, such as lavendar and sunflowers. Sort of a "change the earth" idea. My 8-year-old daughter has also created a "Delightful Donation" Club, and for the last two years she's invited 8-10 friends to gather up clothes, books and toys for a local charity that helps low-income mothers. The kids got a huge charge from carrying the boxes into the agency themselves, and each got to pick out one toy to take home. Afterward we had snacks and playtime back at our house. It wasn't for her birthday, but it could be tailored as such (and if you decided to do gift bags, you could put a few coins of "change" in each one).
Ella has a wonderful heart--may it keep growing!
great ideas for Ella's theme above.
Mine is pretty goofy, but here goes anyway. Great Change relay. Not about changing the world, just about running to the opposite side of the room and putting on crazy clothes.
For each team have a suitcase or box containing a large shirt, shorts, boots and hat. In turn each player must put on old clothes and run to a certain point where they take the old clothes off and put them back in box, then run back to start where the next player repeats the process etc. until one team finishes and wins.
