Some Rescheduling

In case you were counting on it, we're rescheduling The Lovely Mrs. Davis Plays Music For You To Listen To to (almost definitely) August 12. Why?

Because on August 5, we'll have at least two artists playing Kidzapalooza calling in to tell us how it's going -- Jim from ScribbleMonster and Asheba.

Will it make me feel better about not getting to attend the show? Not much, especially since we even got media passes. But it'll still be fun, promise.

Also, Yosi has been working on his guest DJ set and sending some updates, and it's gonna be tasty.

We're Back!

We're back from a pleasant if slightly sunburned week in Rhode Island, and we'll be back live on Saturday, with new-to-us (and some new-in-general) music from Uncle Rock, Toucan Jam, Mr. S, and Scott Hooper. Also, we finally got a new copy of Putumayo's Latin Playground, which walked away from the studio sometime.

Plus, if we remember, Smetana.

And did I mention that you should be buying Erin Flynn's CD? You should. Probably more of that on Saturday too.

A week from Saturday, while we pout about not going to Kidzapalooza (we had media passes and everything, but scheduling conflicts screwed it up), we'll have a guest DJ set from the Lovely Mrs. Davis, who found some great stuff for your listening pleasure. If the phone system works, we'll even talk with her live; I'm interested to find out if she will insist on me calling her "Your loveliness" or what.

Finally, some pictures from ScribbleMonster's session recording their show filling in last week, with captions from the band:

ScribbleJayne is experiencing technical difficulties.

ScribbleMonster (in the background) and ScribbleJim contemplating, "What would Bill and Ella do?"

It looks like she's just sitting, but ScribbleJoyce is actually preparing to rock.

This Might Be a Kids' Radio Show

Welcome to those visiting us from the invaluable (for certain purposes anyway) This Might Be a Wiki. I'm happy that we got linked to from there, especially when we had Andy from The Quiet Ones (formerly of Muckafurgason, who opened for TMBG and had an album produced by Flansburgh) doing a guest DJ set. But you might enjoy the show more often, as we start and end every darn show with TMBG. So stick around!

Playlist for 7-15-06

Archive MP3 is here. Enjoy!

Hi! If you're trying to stream through valleyfreeradio.org, you will observe that the relevant people at the station cleverly let the domain lapse. I will have the archive MP3 up here this morning before we head out of town.

Grr. Sorry.

To listen to any archive, you should be able to just click on the MP3 link in any of the posts here, or click on the "archive" link over on the right and you can download them there. They're pretty big files, so dialup users may get grumpy.

Wow, that's going to be cool too.

A week from this Saturday, as mentioned before, ScribbleMonster (whose books and music you should have) will be guest DJing for the entire darn show, while we lounge on the beaches of Rhode Island. (Doesn't sound quite as indulgent as "the beaches of Rio" or many other beaches, but oh well.)

Anyway, we just got the pre-recorded show so I can get it to the relvant people at the station to play, and it is excellent. Like Andy's guest set for this Saturday, a ton of stuff we've never played (Sly & the Family Stone, the Figgs, some Sesame Street vinyl (!), Smoking Popes, etc.), plus our standard features -- TMBG to start and end, a "Are you prepared to rock?" set (with a hilarious opening), and all the rest.

If it's not obvious, I am very excited about these guest DJ appearances; I hope y'all like them as much as I do. Please post comments once you hear them. And there are a bunch more very exciting guest DJs coming soon...

(And in the hour before Quiet One Andy's guest set this week, we'll probably have new music from Yosi, Erin Lee & Marci, and others.)

Best Sentence Ever in a Washington Post Obituary

Syd Barrett, who will make an appearance in the guest DJ set this Saturday, died last week. From today's Washington Post obit, containing this paragraph:

After brief hospitalization, Mr. Barrett was cared for by his mother, and he rarely left home. After his mother died in 1991, his health worsened, and his eyesight began to fail. He enjoyed gardening, however, and was said to be skillful at stuffing peppers.

The emphasized sentence (my emphasis) is the best sentence ever seen in a Post obituary.

This is going to be very, very cool.

I've mentioned before that we've got some guest DJ sets coming up. I'm listening to the first one we received -- provided by Andy from The Quiet Ones -- and it is even cooler than I expected. Totally different than what we usually play, but absolutely great. Troggs, Bowie, Tobs, Kinks, Lynn Redgrave, Syd Barrett, Tiny Tim, Daniel Johnston, and a bunch more.

We will be playing it this week. Be sure to check it out.

And it makes me even more excited for the other guest DJ sets we have coming up...

Late addition: Stefan has a great review of the Quiet Ones' album up.

Memo to Self

To: Bill
From: Bill
Re: Get there

Hey Bill,

You need to find a law school that wants you to teach in Philadelphia.

Frezza, Gustafer Yellowgold, Zanes, Deedle Deedle Dees, Lunch Money, Rymer, Milkshake, Audrarox, etc., etc. That's a heck of a venue.

Hugs,
Bill

P.S. Also, you should hope this show (click on "Screenings" and view the first one) gets picked up.

When I Was Young, We Had To Crawl Uphill Through Snow To Find Kids' Music

Mrs. Davis has an interesting post (and I have a comment on it) about whether there's something new going on, kids'-music-wise.

Also: Gosh, I wish we could go to this event. Fountains of Wayne and Alejandro Escovedo on the same stage? Dang, that'd be good. Alas.
