Brainstorm With Me, Won't You?

Okay, this is the coolest e-mail I've gotten in a long time. With the subject line "John F. from TMBG here," the text was this:

So we want to put together a little song for your show. What should we mention in the lyric?
JF

Yes folks, that's right, They Might Be Giants will be writing and recording a song for our little show. But it presents a conundrum: What should we ask for in the lyrics?

I'm thinking the show name, certainly. Probably not the station name or timeslot, just in case those change at some point. Ella's name? My name? "Are you prepared to rock?"? "Based on the radical notion that music for kids shouldn't want to make parents gouge out their ears"? (What would you rhyme with "gouge out your ears," anyway?) Ella thought maybe we should suggest that they namecheck some of our favorite artists, a la Mary Lou Lord in "His Indie World."

Other thoughts? Post 'em!

(And yes, I jumped around the house giggling when I got the e-mail.)

You got email from Flans!!!! How amazing!

I think the word "podcast" would be funny in a song.

How totally flippin' cool are you?!

I definitely vote for Ella and Bill in the song. But you know we're all about Ella, here.

Um, they could namecheck your wacky stalker commenters from all across the country? (that's a joke)

I don't know... See - all that walking up hill both ways in the snow pays off. Too doggone cool. enjoy it. Sounds like you are!

*oh, and speaking of gouging out ears - Max feels uber-cool when he wears his new Spare the Rock t-shirt*

Oooooooooh. I've received similar types of e-mail, but that would be just about the coolest.

You're still giggling, aren't you?

I think the John and John creativity flows best when their restrictions are the least. "Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child," and that's all.

"Mr. Houge has fears / But the music won't make you gouge out your ears."

Flans, you can direct my portion of those songwriting royalties to a charity of your choice.

(Goes off to ponder if he shouldn't change the name of his website to something a little more rhyming-friendly.)

Heck yeah, I'm giggling still.

It will be "months probably" until we get the track. We ended up mentioning the ear-gouging slogan, the "are you prepared to rock?" thing, our various names, and that's about it. Plus I sent a link to a picture of him holding Ella when she was about a year old.

...and thanks to the Quiet Ones for sending him our way!

Congratulations, Bill, that totally rocks!

I don't have any suggestions to add, but if they get stuck, have 'em call me and I'll be glad to help out. Ha Ha!

I can't wait to hear it!

Maybe this means that I don't have to keep militantly avoiding playing copywritten recordings of TMBG songs on my show about They Might Be Giants and their fans!

wow, that is too cool, we are loving your podcasts here in the UK, and I am telling all my friends!!!

Thanks, everyone. I'm finally getting to where I don't giggle about it every morning, just most mornings. Add on the Lunch Money/Uncle Rock show we just confirmed for November, and things are going rather swimmingly...
